Next step

Seven days, seven backgrounds. What now? On to Week 2 of the February Challenge.

Some of you have probably already thought of uses for your coloured paper. If nothing else they make good backgrounds for journal pages.

Theses are just four of mine from last week.

This week I’m going to continue creating colours on pages in a similar fashion, but sometimes add more water so that I can cause the paint to run in certain areas. This is easily done by propping, or standing the book upright.

Your task this week is twofold.

Firstly, find an inspirational quote. I have often quoted this one by Picasso

“Inspiration comes, but it has to find you working”.

I have found it very true, the more you do the more ideas flow. I determined that find a new quote for this exercise, however, so that I could write it on one of the pages.

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” Edward De Bono.

Who is Edward de Bono? He’s the man who first coined the phrase ‘Lateral Thinking’

Secondly let’s create some patterns over these backgrounds. You will have plenty of ideas on this front, but this week confine yourself to pen and pencil. My demo pattern is nothing more than a simple one drawn with a ballpoint pen. The point of this is to show that anything can be used, and a large workspace isn’t always required.

I began with a very simple wavy grid drawn lightly in pencil. Next a rough arch shape was added to most, but not all, of the grid. Once the ballpoint was completely dry I used an eraser to remove the pencil lines.

A few more lines added, and that’s that! Finished? You decide. It’s a journal page and the journal police are Farr too busy elsewhere to worry about our pages.

So, to sum up:

  1. Find an inspirational quote
  2. Draw a few grid patterns
  3. Continue to colour some daily pages.
